Mantel Clock: Quality 1954 English Table / Mantel Clock by Rotherham & Sons of Coventry

Wonderful, high-quality English table clock of vintage age, by Rotherham & Sons, Coventry. This is one of Rotherham’s scarce ‘391’ models, with Mahogany case, brass bun feet, and convex glazed frontage. The machine plained Rotherham’s signed silvered dial, has black Roman main numerals and Arabic subsidiary numbers, finished with its original pair of blued and bespoke “R S” initialled hands. Accessed by a hinged rear door and protected by its original, transparent Perspex dust cover, the clocks exceptional circular 8-day lever movement is driven by a Rotherham’s 11-jewel screwed balance platform escapement with Chronovar hair spring (helping to ensure the escapement is impervious to temperature change and resistant to corrosion), the platform being signed “Made in England” and “R&S.” (Such was the accepted holistic quality and workmanship of Rotherham’s platform escapements they were often used by other high-end English clockmakers for use in their own branded clock movements). The military style hand winding button and fixed rear winding key are screw mounted on the lacquered concentrically snailed brass backplate, which is stamped "Rotherham Made in England”, with serial number "A09107" (indicating that the clock was made in c1954). On the inside of the rear door, there is also a ‘British Thomson Houston Co.’ presentation plaque to J. Adcock, for 35 years’ service. Payment - We Accept: - Debit / Credit Cards. - Bacs Transfer.
