A fine quality marquetry panel depicting a salmon leaping from the water to snatch a mayfly. The panel is beautifully brought to life by the careful selection of various woods that work superbly with the subject depicted, these include birch, walnut and even the slight use of mother of pearl. The very bold and contrasting two tone nature of the piece, and brevity of the design works brilliantly to draw the eye to the detailed depiction of the salmon. The marquetry panel has a simple mahogany edge and as a sign of the quality it is even very nicely veneered on the reverse in mahogany. This type of marquetry panel is often associated with the Rowley Gallery which commissioned artist at the beginning of the twentieth century to create designs for wooden panels.
This piece is not marked but it is certainly of the quality of these Rowley panels if not better.
