Description
This is a rare Helena Wolfsohn, Meissen style Etui or Needle Case, 19th century, with textured yellow ground and gilt metal fittings, and 6 painted panels with a marine theme, four in polychrome and two in puce monochrome For confirmation of Meissen style, see Lot 23, Sotheby’s, Furniture, Sculptures and Objects of Art, 07 November 2013, Paris, for a 1750-1760 etui of the same size, shape, and texture. There is a faint blue mark visible through the painting on the base of the case, which we believe conforms to the Meissen Augustus Rex mark. This mark was used extensively by Helena Wolfsohn, who was known for copying Meissen designs from earlier eras. The rarity of this case is that examples of etuis by Helena Wolfsohn are, to the best of our knowledge, unknown.
