Its always been a passion for me the Arts and Crafts movement. The items for sale are a reflection of Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, modernism, aesthetic movement, anglo Japanese, period antiques, decorative items, Cotswold School, limed oak, British architecture, architects/designers/craftsmen. Glasgow school.
This is a 'Mouseman style' book rest. There is evidence of the one side that there may have been a mouse there as a rectangular piece of timber has been inserted to match the rest of the oak used in terms of grain, density, colour, patina etc. This is a well made piece by a master craftsman. The sides are typical of the table tops on dining tables which are synonymous with a certain type of craftsmen starting with Robert Mouseman and many other critters like gnome man, acorn man to name a few. Their style of design and construction was unique and totally different from the work of Gimson & the Barnsleys.
Given the high level of skill one is left wondering why the rectangular piece was inserted. This is reflected in a very low asking price. Both sides adzed. Deep rich chestnut colour.
