Based in stunning Speyside, Moray, Scotland, we (Mr & Mrs W) are passionate about quality antique items with great design and evident craft, predominantly from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century.
In particular, we enjoy period items reflecting the beautiful design and aesthetic changes from the decorative arts, from circa 1850 - 1960. Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers.
We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object.
We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Thanks for viewing our selection of stock, we are always pleased to see items pass through our hands to new owners and homes as antiques remain a great green recyclable purchase!

Description
For sale is a highly decorative Syrian/Moroccan (North African) side table with micro mosaic parquetry and inlay from the late 19th or early 20th century circa 1890-1914.
These style of small tables became increasingly popular from the decorative interest in exotic designs from the Middle-East and Asia as part of the showcase of the Brighton Pavilion, the influence of Liberty & Co on interior design and the Aesthetic Movement.
- This pedestal table has an intricate design with a warm light brown colour, intricate wood marquetry (Sandal, Satin & Cedar wood) and mother of pearl inlay design with good geometric design and antique patina.
- Liberty & Co retailed a range of 'exotic/Eastern Art' from the 'Orient' and Turkish/Ottoman/Syrian/Indian small side tables in a number of decorative patterns and of varying sizes at the end of the 19th Century. These first decorative and interior design trends made these small types of decorative middle eastern occasional tables popular and of great utility with a highly decorative design and flexible utility .
- The antique table is in un-restored condition and as shown by the photos with some wear to the table-top, which has a loss of marquetry and mother of pearl with some knocks to the table edge. The tables side panels / legs are in good solid condition, it tends to be the main table top inlay surfaces that can suffer from wear. This example has no evidence of any woodworm.
Ready for a further 125 years of decorative utility.
**Turkish tables are noted (like other pairs for sale with W&W Antiques): On page 10,11 & 28; Bennett, D. (2012) Liberty's furniture 1875-1915, The birth of modern interior design.
