Description
Artist in oils and watercolour. Born in Gorakhpur, India, and moved to England to be educated in 1912.
He studied at the Slade School of fine art (1931-32), and at the Royal Academy schools (1932-35.) he won the Royal Academy gold medal and travelling scholarship in 1933 and the Rome scholarship in mural painting in 1935.
He lived for much of his life in Redhill, and lectured at Brighton College of art. During the 1950s he designed posters for the General Post Office, Shell, Esso and other companies.
His style is bold and colourful, reflecting the influence of the Fauvist movement, of which he was one of the few exponents in the Post war period.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Leicester Gallery, Wildenstein’s Galleries, Odette Gilbert Gallery and Sally Hunter fine art.
His work has been purchased by the Contemporary art society, Recording Britain (Pilgrim Trust), British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Towner art gallery (Eastbourne), Brighton art gallery, Ferens art gallery (Hull), Oxford University and Reading University.
