Country House Venetian Sofa.
An extremely rare if not unique Venetian Giltwood sofa dating from the mid 19th century with a wonderful pair of hand carved and water gilded satyrs to the ends.
In Greek mythology Satyrs are one of a class of lustful, drunken woodland gods. In Greek art Satyrs were characterised by their ribaldry and were known as lovers of wine, music, dancing and women. They were companions of the god Dionysus and were believed to inhabit remote locales, such as woodlands, mountains, and pastures.
The Satyrs are in super order with a lovely antique patina to the original water gilding. The frame is in good sound condition with no movement to the joints
The sofa is upholstered in a quality rich velvet brocade in fern green, burgundy and blue which is in excellent condition.
The sofa measures 133 cms wide 54 cms deep by 87 cms high.
UK delivery can be arranged with our careful furniture courier and costs £75 plus vat to most destinations
