Description
This near matching Pair 19th Century ash & elm armchairs have even got that wonderful fireside colouration built up over the 150 plus years.
The Windsor chair is a quintessential piece of English furniture, admired for its rustic charm, durability,, and timeless design. Among the many variations, the 19th Century Windsor Wheelback Ash & Elm Armchair stands out as a significant example of the craftsmanship and functional elegance of the period.
The defining feature of these chairs is their "wheelback" design, a style that gets its name from the central wheel-shaped motif on the backrest. This design element, often carved into the splat, adds an ornate touch to the otherwise utilitarian structure of the chair. The wheelback was particularly popular in the early to mid-19th century, reflecting the growing influence of decorative styles in furniture.
Another interesting feature is the swept back arm rest giving the chairs arm a canter levered look when viewed from the side. Probably my favourite feature on these classic chairs.
Tapered spindles form the 'H' stretchers with a nice turned detail on the legs. The seat has a subtle saddle shape and the ash seat has the most wonderful grain detail.
Don't often come across a near matching pair of Windsor Wheelbacks, so don't miss these.
