An attractive pair of late Victorian American carved armchairs in walnut (dated between 1870s-1890s). The rectilinear shape, lightly incised geometric designs, modest curved elements and low-relief nature-related carvings on these armchairs are reminiscent of the style advocated by British architect and furniture designer Charles L. Eastlake in his book "Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery and Other Details".
When it reached the United States in the early 1870s, his book greatly influenced American furniture manufacturers. Indeed, they interpreted the reformed Eastlake style in different ways to create their own designs on the basis of sturdy craftsmanship and simpler ornamentation, as opposed to the heavy and more elaborately decorated Victorian furniture more popular of the period.
The armchairs offered here are decorated with low-relief leaf and trellis carving on the inside head rails, line incised geometric carving on the ears and arms, additional carving on the stiles, arm rests and front seat rails, and pierced acanthus carving on the arms. The sprung seats are raised on turned block forelegs, which are connected to the bottom of the front seat rails by crested arched corner brackets. The armchairs are fully traditionally re-upholstered by The Sitting Place and then covered in stunning Vine (Dark Olive) fabric by Morris & Co. These armchairs would make a very decorative addition to a lounge setting. Table and accessories are for display purposes only.

condition
condition
Original condition with various knocks and general wear commensurate with age and past use (particular to the outside backs and arms). Some knocks have been filled in the past with wood filler. An armchair has one of the ear carvings not entirely aligned with the rest of the carving on the head rail (see photo), and also has a small chipped off piece to the bottom of the side seat rail. The other armchair has a chipped off part to the outside stile, visible when looking at the armchair from the back (see photo). More photos may be provided upon request. Overall still a very decorative pair of armchairs, cleaned and waxed.
