Description
A scarce lacquered brass aneroid pocket barometer altimeter by Short & Mason No 52558 for Dollond c.1924. Pocket barometer having 1¾" silvered and die struck dial, the outer bezel operated altitude ring calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 8,000ft and divided down to 100ft, inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 23" – 31" and divided down to 1/20th". The lower part with retailer's details, "Dollond, London," and serial "No. 52558." Blued steel pointer under bevelled glass. The first quality Short & Mason movement driven from a single 1⅛" single nickel alloy capsule tensioned on a C spring, the chassis with Short & Mason logogram, the cock signed by the finisher and dated "13/8/24." All contained within a semi barrel form case with ribbed decoration, pendant and bow, calibration port to verso. Presented in its original oxblood leather over timber, green silk and velvet lined travel case, the lid silk with gold block Dollond logogram. Snap closure on a button release. The case bottom stamped “Made in England.” Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working acceptably well with easily good enough levels of accuracy across the metrological range. The dial with some light marking, depending upon incident lighting more or almost invisible. The brass case retaining most of its original finish with some minor marks and signs of wear. The travel case structurally sound, the leather over the button release replaced, some minor marks and signs of wear, the bottom with greater wear. The fabric interior clean, bright and vibrant. Comments: This is a good original instrument, particularly nice in that the movement carries the Short & Mason logogram together with the finisher's signature and date, a combination that we rarely see, and an indication of better quality.
