Description
A good French nickel plated double-sided pocket barometer altimeter compass thermometer compendium by Antoine Redier c.1885. Pocket barometer having printed white enamel dial, the outer part with prognostications in French, the lower marked “Baromètre Anéroïde” together with the Redier Ared logogram, the barometric scale calibrated in centimetres of Hg divided down to 1mm with a range from 57cm - 80cm, the inner altimetric scale calibrated in metres with a range from 0 – 2400m. The movement constructed between twin plates driven from a single soldered 1³⁄₁₆mm capsule, cantilevered and rack-and-pinion transmission. Blued steel pointer under flat bevelled glass, bezel set index. The hinged verso revealing calibration port, and having semi-circular thermometer set on an bronzed and lacquered register, calibrated in Centigrade and Reaumur with corresponding ranges -30° to 60° and -20° to 50°, all divided to 1°, under a bevelled low dome glass. Inset compass with raised and silvered azimuth ring calibrated in degrees to 360°, the centre rose with cardinal and intercardinal points in both French and English, magnetic North indicated by an arrow. Side-mounted transit lock. All contained in a drum form nickel plated case, pendant and bow, and presented in an explorer’s style, tan leather and brown velvet lined case, strap and buckle. Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test, the barometer working well with acceptable accuracy. Generally this instrument is in very good condition, all aspects working correctly. The enamel dial near perfect, the thermometer with unbroken thread reading 1° high at 26°C. The compass swinging freely, easily finding north, the transit lock working. Externally the instrument retains much original plating but with signs of wear and light abrasion. The glasses with a few light marks. Hinged verso opens easily and closes securely. Comments: Instruments of this quality by one of France’s pre-eminent makers are hard to find, and very few of these Redier instruments survive with undamaged enamel dials. This is a good instrument in much above average condition, complete and original, and now must be considered very scarce. Very much a collector’s piece.
