Description
Gentleman's highly impressive original vintage Waltham (Swiss), high grade 17 jewel railway type pocket watch with beautiful ivory Montgomery style dial in a chunky 16 size, 10ct rolled gold plate, highly polished (mirror finish) hermetic case. Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked, serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial:- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss Montgomery style ivory coloured dial in very near mint condition - absolutely no fading or nibbles and just one extremely feint and short little scratch (showing under eyeglass only) at number 2 (so small is not showing up in the photographs but mentioning for accuracy). Clearly stamped in bold, black very fancy script; Waltham 17 Jewels with their red 'W' Trade symbol above and signed in arched black and red script above the sub dial; Shockresistant Antimagnetic with; Swiss in black script below the sub dial. Beautifully scrolled large black Arabic numbers (note the lovely little arrow tip to number 4) with black minute markers, bolder black diamond shaped 5 minute markers to chapter ring and the rarer alternating red/black Arabic numbers ( 1 - 60) forming the outer chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original big bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order. Original thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in clear and bright condition with very few overall tiny little surface scratches showing under eyeglass only. Case:- The highly polished and very chunky 10ct rolled gold plate (stamped) 16 size case (5cm diameter / 6.1cm from top of bow to base, 2cm depth is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is exactly 90 grams), robust and in wonderful condition (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures, was extremely difficult to photograph) - absolutely no indentations or wear and just a few extremely light and fine little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 50+ years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front bezel and back cover screw on and off correctly, closing tightly (hermetic - an early form of waterproofing) and I have taken the liberty of oiling the threads for years of continued smooth operation. Both covers have an attractive, slightly raised (and totally un-worn) 'pie crust' circumference making for an easy grip. The back cover carries a wonderful frosted decoration to the inside and is clearly stamped; Star Watch Case Co 10K Rolled Gold Plate is numbered; 8-0332 5703544. Also carries an old service mark. Movement:- The stem wound and set high grade 17 ruby jewelled 3/4 plate lever movement is in superb clean and bright order and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker. Carries the most wonderful subtle wavy engine turning to the top plates - the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made. Has a solid bi-arm balance wheel with brass balance screws, steel balance spring which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well, large ruby jewels in sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels, attractive engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original, matching steel case screws. Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched script; Waltham Watch Co. Seventeen 17 Jewels Unadjusted and is numbered; Ms66. Also stamped on the balance cock; Oxm and is stamped to the bottom plate (under the balance assembly) with a capital letter; U within a shield shaped cartouche (Unitas) and numbered; 431 445. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely original large flat topped totally un-worn 'onion' crown and original big firm un-worn horseshoe shaped bow (looks to have never been carried on a watch chain). Appraisal:- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Swiss Waltham railway type timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
