This is an exceptionally fine antique soft cotton or 'Summer' rug from Agra in India dating from around 1900. These fine cotton carpets would have been more used during the warmest season and are made from cotton so fine it feels and handles like velvet. The carpet has a stunning floral central medallion set within an azure blue field. To the spandrels are stylised flowerheads and foliage. The multiple ivory borders have angular meandering vines flanked by soft terracotta guard stripes. The carpet has some very soft abrashing to the field, the colours are very pleasing and the carpet is in excellent condition overall with a neat even low pile. Rare to find in such good condition, the carpet measures 218 cms by 137 cms. It looks delightful down on the floor but makes a stunning wall hanging.
