Description
Superb piece by Rowley Gallery of Kensington (c.1930) in its original faded old silvered lacquer with wavy lined decorated borders, stepped handles and surviving in a wonderfully mellowed aged condition. A rare piece indeed. We have an original label to one of the drawers reading “Modern Decoration Rowley 140-2 Church St W.8 and a faded paper label to the rear. The Rowley Gallery was established in 1898 at 6 High Road, Silver Street, Kensington. In 1909, Silver Street was renamed, and although remaining in the same premises, the new address became 140 Church Street. Albert Rowley and his wife Emma founded the business in the first year of their marriage, when it specialised in picture framing, mounting, restoration, carving, gilding and exhibitions of paintings. Before very long The Rowley Gallery was also producing inlaid wood panels and furniture and by 1912 had expanded to include 142 Church Street. Rowley's son Laurence, an enthusiastic furniture designer, joined the firm in the mid-1920s. The piece is ready to place with genuine wear to the original finish. The drawers and cabinet doors close well etc. Billy Hunt has successfully focused on British furniture and lighting since 2014 and always has an interesting ever changing selection of carefully chosen pieces from the early 1800s to late 1970s.
