Rare Stormoguide Ships Barometer by Short & Mason c.1930

A very good and most uncommon Stormoguide ships bulkhead barometer by Short and Mason c.1930. Marine barometer having 5¾in silvered and die struck dial arranged with various Stormoguide weather prognostications to the periphery, markings in red denoting falling pressure, those in black rising. The barometric scale arranged in a classical Art Deco style in the form of a hexagon, calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 26in – 31in and divided down to 1/10th. The lower part marked “Compensated for Temperature,” “Short & Mason, London,” “Made in England,” and “Copyright 1930.” Japanned steel pointer, gilt brass index with red illumination, bevelled glass. The conventional movement driven from a single 2½in capsule and tensioned on a C spring, applied grey anti-corrosion paint and bright plated small parts, the chassis struck with Short & Mason “S&M” logogram and marked in pencil with initials and service date “17.9.47.” Raised over the case back on three stand-offs. Presented in a deep lacquered brass drum form case, the verso flange with fixing points. Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working very well with easily acceptable levels of accuracy across the standard meteorological scale. Sensitive with good progression. The dial with some signs of ageing and minor mark. The case with some wear to original lacquered finish, points of oxidation, the glass undamaged. Comments: This is the first dedicated ships barometer in this popular Stormoguide style seen. Extremely unusual, the build quality is very good. Aesthetically very attractive, a lovely instrument suited to the collector or connoisseur, or perhaps as a perfect addition to a fine classic yacht.
