Description
Clockwise is delighted to present another fine eight day Regency longcase clock having just enjoyed full and sympathetic restorations performed to the case, dial and movement. Dating from circa 1810, in lovely condition and standing 2.12m (6 feet 11 inches) tall the lovely golden oak case is crossbanded with mahogany and decorative inlay. The case has a lovely patina and is surmounted by an arched hood with tapered pillars flanking the hood door to the front. The trunk contains a long door which retains its working turnkey lock and is flanked by rounded columns The clock stands on matching mahogany bracket feet below the base which has matching crossbanding. The beautiful arched dial is a particular feature of this clock, having Arabic numbers typical of the period and conveying the image of a shepherdess, her flock, a dog and her suitor. There is gesso-work to the well-painted dial along with lovely corner paintings and the dial is signed 'James Coates, Stourbridge'. The four original brass hands are delightful and the date sub-dial works as it should. The four pillar, rack-striking, eight day anchor escapement movement has been fully refurbished with new lines provided and the clock strikes the full hours on a beautifully mellow bell. The clock benefits from my three year guarantee. This clock really is a beautiful and gently imposing piece of furniture and delivery and set-up is available. James Coates is recorded as working in Stourbridge, Worcestershire from 1805 until his death in 1812. His son (John Hardwick Coates) was also a clockmaker in London. He was apprenticed in 1813 and became a member of the Clockmakers' Company in 1822. Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.
