Description
We have for sale a rather stunning Regency period mahogany campaign chest/washstand/bureau.
This lovely piece of campaign furniture is very deceptively in the form of a very square looking chest of drawers. However,in actual fact the chest consists of a number of very useful components. The top is formed by two fold out lids revealing a easel mirror and a number compartments along. This upper section sits over a pull out desk, beneath which are located over 5 drawers of different sizes and shapes. The three drawers, consist of 2 to the left with one narrow deep drawer to the right. This sit over a further two drawers. The lower left would have housed a chamber pot and the left would have been zinc lined and functioned as a wash basin. Both the lower drawers were designed with fold out legs to the front, providing extra for them when open. The cabinet stand on four tapered square legs terminating in brass casters. The back of the cabinet is also fitted with brass supports that fold out to support the open lids of the upper section and the two ends of the cabinet are fitted with brass carrying handles
The cabinet is furnished with brass lion head ring handles and the mirror and the compartment behind the mirror have retained their original fabric pulls.
This obviously well traveled and well used campaign chest is just over 36.3 inches (92cm) high, 28 inches (71cm) wide when closed and 19.5 inches (49.5cm) deep. The chest is in a good antique condition, but has been modified a bit over the past couple of centuries. The removable pincushion in the upper section and the ink bottles are probably later additions, the top left hand drawer has been lined with plywood, the left hand lower drawer lacks its original chamber pot and although the front legs of the drawer are still intact they now support a replacement drawer base, and the right hand lower drawer has lost its zinc lining.
