A fine regency painted, penwork games box of crimson colour. The box of sarcophagus shape stands on the original gilt metal ball feet and also retains the original gilt metal handles. The box has the most wonderful base colour of crimson red onto which has been painted and gilded a beautiful array of exotic flowers. The interior is fitted for card games and most of the lining is original although I do feel that the lining to the lid has been replaced. The interior retains an interesting collection of games from over its history. The box is in good condition with fairly little wear to the decoration though I do think the wooden strips to the very top of the lid have been added at some point. It does retain the original working key. The whole is a lovely example of this type of antique box with a huge amount of decorative appeal. C.1820.
