Based in stunning Speyside, Moray, Scotland, we (Mr & Mrs W) are passionate about quality antique items with great design and evident craft, predominantly from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. In particular, we enjoy period items reflecting the beautiful design and aesthetic changes from the decorative arts, from circa 1850 - 1960. Including the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts Movement (In particular of Scottish origin), Modernism, Art Deco and Streamlining. We also enjoy the great craft and quality construction in folk art and vernacular items from across Europe. In particular, Scandinavian decorative items from the 18th and 19th Century. We enjoy being analytical in our approach and supporting our stock with background research, provenance and history through researching the items, the period, designers and retailers. We often hunt the country from our Scottish location, but routinely search from Lancashire and Yorkshire as well as buying trips further afield to supply items online. We also like to take on items that particularly interest us from earlier periods, dependent on our fascination for an object. We are always learning, and happy to share knowledge gained, so please do get in touch. Thanks for viewing our selection of stock, we are always pleased to see items pass through our hands to new owners and homes as antiques remain a great green recyclable purchase! Description
For sale is a beautiful vintage hand woven Swedish 'agedyna' or carriage cushion / coverlet in original condition. - The woven cushion cover has a beautiful geometric / floral pattern reminiscent of rug patterns and design similar to kilim rugs from the middle east. This originated most likely from the Skåne Region of Sweden. - It is in a lovely light green, red, blue, yellow and pink, the reverse is a plain blue green linen. - The edge of the cushion has continuous interspersed colours as a short fabric fringe to prevent wear to the edge, common to these cushions/coverlets in a traditional folk Scandinavian style. - The woven material is wool on linen. - The textile is initialed as Nh from 1944 (the second larger piece by the same individual from 1943 is also for sale from W&W Antiques). - It is from the Skåne region, near Malmo, Sweden which has a strong folk tradition of woven textiles influenced both from Flemish weavers from the low countries and Persian Kilim style rugs from the middle-east. - The woven front surface is backed with original blue-green linen (in cushion form) but has not been stuffed and has been displayed as a wall hanging or coverlet with small sewn loops on the reverse corners. This is a lovely, characterful Scandinavian textile made in the middle of Ww2 and at 76 years of age in good condition. It is in original condition and so does show signs of age-related wear as shown by the images. If you are interested in both of the textiles together by Nh please do get in touch.
