A very impressive set of 6 Arts & Crafts oak high back dining chairs dating to c. 1900. They consist of 2 elbow/carver chairs and 4 smaller single chairs. The decorative feature of these high back chairs is the rounded panel of the headrest, which is inlaid with an ebonised wood disk surrounding an inner boxwood disk and finally a central pewter inlay, which extends downward into the splat. Two chequer line bandings run up the sides of the vertical splats. The seats are traditionally re-upholstered by The Sitting Place and then finished in Hera feather (pewter) linen fabric by Liberty. The seats are raised on two simple square tapered front legs ending in block feet. All the legs are linked by simple square stretchers. The decorative elements of the backrests of these chairs bear a resemblance to those of high back chairs designed by G M Ellwood and manufactured by J S Henry (London). As seen in one of their adverts in "The Cabinet Maker & Art Furnisher" Trade Journal of July 1893, J S Henry states "No designs published. All special goods, Not to be seen elsewhere in the Trade".
Although the chairs cannot be definitively attributed to J S Henry, they still are a very collectable set of dining chairs that would make a stunning addition to an Arts and Crafts dining room interior.
