Silver Letter-Opener with Cheshire Cat Finial – 1914 (1 of 5)

I trade in small silver, jewellery and objets d'art. I sell primarily at antiques fairs and in cabinets in Christique Antique Centre in Dorking. I try to find unusual and interesting stock and like to keep turning it over, so I can buy more. Postage and packing are free within the UK - unless explicitly stated otherwise. All fine jewellery will be supplied with a box. If the box/case is described in the text, it will be the one photographed, but may not be if it is not mentioned explicitly. I keep hardly any stock at home, if you want to buy something and need it urgently, I will usually do it the next day, but it may take me some time to respond if you need extra photographs and/or details about the piece that I do not have to hand, as I typically visit the antiques centre just once a week. If you don't see what you're looking for - feel free to send an enquiry via the site. I have only been able to list a portion of my stock.

Description
For cat-lovers and Alice-in-Wonderland fans! Appropriately assayed in Chester, this small letter-opener is still a functional piece of silver, as well as an amusing example of antique novelty. The finial is decorated with a cast, grinning Cheshire cat, atop a forked capital at the end of a narrow blade. The blade carries full English Sterling hallmarks and the sponsor's/maker's mark S.I.Ld for Stokes & Ireland Limited (William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland). It is laso struck "Butt Silversmith Chester" to the other side. It is possible that Butt&co - who were working silversmiths - actually made this, but that Stokes and Ireland presented it for assay and marketed it. However, it is equally possible that Butt&Co purchased this from Stokes and Ireland - as they were retailers in Eastgate Row, Chester. In additon, along the back of the cat, there is registered design number probably 395533 that implies the design dates from 1902/3.
