George Graham London, c1743 Silver case, 52 mm Cylinder escapement A cylinder movement, by the great George Graham, in a later purpose made silver case. Movement : The gilt cylinder movement is fully signed and numbered (6174). Diamond endstone and signed removable gilt brass dustcap. The dial plate and underside of the balance cock foot are engraved with the serial number (6174) which is also scratched onto the inside of the dustcap. There are a few scratches to the top plate, mainly around the pillar tops, but generally all in good original condition and running well. Dial : Fine white enamel dial. There is a small mark on the edge at 12, and a light hairline across the edge at 4. This dial was probably added when the movement was recased in 1853. Nice matching gold beetle and poker hands. Case : A heavy and good quality silver consular case, with London hallmarks for 1853. Maker’s mark Ef. There is one light bruise to the back and some wear to the engine turned engraving around the band and to the back. The hinges are fine and both covers snap shut. The bull’s eye high dome crystal is also fine. The silver case was probably made specially for this movement, around 1853. A wide dial false plate was also added to accommodate the large enamel dial. The serial number of the movement dates it to about 1743, by which time George Graham had switched from verge to cylinder movements.
