Description
Very attractive and quite unusual brass desk barometer of pocket size by Short & Mason retailed by C.W. Dixey & Son, London c.1922. Pocket barometer having 1¾" silvered and die struck dial, outer bezel driven altitude ring calibrated in feet with a range from 0 - 8,000ft divided down to 100ft, the upper part with standard meteorological terms, and "Compensated for Temperature," signed by the retailer, "C.W. Dixey & Son, 3 New Bond St, London." The barometric scale calibrated in inches with a range from 23" – 31" divided to 1/20th. Blued steel pointer, bevelled glass, calibration port to verso. The conventional Vidie pattern movement driven from a single 1⅛" capsule tensioned on a C spring, the chassis struck with Short & Mason "S&M" logogram, the movement dated "15/12/22," and initialled by the finisher. Contained within a brass drum form case pivoting in a Y-form yoke raised on a single pillar over a circular stepped base. Condition: Fully serviced, conserved, and calibrated under laboratory conditions, the movement working acceptably well over the usual range, see performance chart. The dial with some minor marks, the brass case with good shine and in good condition. Comments: Aesthetically attractive and really quite unusual. A super and thoughtful gift!
