Description
'Soldiers Dream', Crimean War Figure Staffordshire Flat Back Figurine - Earthenware flat backs and figurines for domestic decoration were first produced in Staffordshire in the 1830s. Production continued throughout the Victorian period and into the early 20th century, produced in vast numbers usually modelled after popular prints, events and figures. This Staffordshire Crimean War Figure "A Soldier's Dream" is based on the poem, of the same name, by Thomas Campbell.
The figurine is of a Scottish solider asleep, and seated cross legged. His right hand is resting on his lap and his left elbow resting on a drum. His left hand is resting on his head and there is a flag to his left with a cannon by his feet.
This is a sparsely decorated, hand painted figurine with gold gilt, his face is charmingly hand coloured with some colour accents to the clothing and foliage. The hat has coloured feathers plumes to his hat and coloured socks. The clan scarf is draped over his shoulder.
This figure has general crazing and one small nick to the nose tip.
