Description
This substantial 15th Century Eastern European ring features an eagle with its wings spread. The shoulders each feature an intaglio frond leading to lateral disc panels each with a fleur-de-lys motif. To the base is a knop.
At a staggering 44.12 grams, this ring is a large and bold piece of fully wearable medieval statement jewellery.
Approximately Size U UK/Au, 10 ¼ Us/Ca, 62 ¾ Fr/Ru
Provenance: Acquired from an established Bnta and Aiaa registered ancient art dealer. Formerly from the private collection of a Russian gentleman living in London; acquired from a Chelsea collector in the 2000s; the Chelsea collection having been formed from 1970-1990s.
See Cf. Chadour, A.B., Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, item 617 for a similar type of ring. The iconography of the ring is European but the inspiration for the type, with raised knops to the hoop, is probably Islamic - Seljuk or Timurid in origin (see Chadour, 1994, items 530, 533, 535).
