A fine quality oil on tin after the original Dutch Golden Age painting by Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667) painted in 1662 and titled ‘The poultry seller’. The work is a faithful and high-quality copy of the original with all the abundant detail. The painting is signed to the lower left but the signature is somewhat illegible. The painting is in good untouched condition with some minor areas of touching in as is often the case with works on metal. The gilt frame is the original and in nice original condition with some minor areas of repair and overpaint to the gilding. The work is not dated but would have been created around 1870. The whole is a great example of the revival of interest in Dutch Golden Age works that occurred in the nineteenth century and is of a particularly large size for a work on tin.
