Description
Offered for sale is a lovely 19th Century, cobalt blue and white plate in the "Laurelia" pattern, manufactured by Thomas C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co, in Caulden Place, Hanley.
The lozenge shaped "Kite" registration mark on the reverse tells us that this design was first registered on 24th October 1880. The "Kite" mark was used from 1842 until 1883. This tells us that our plate was manufactured between 24th October 1880 and the 31st December 1883. From 1884 registration numbers started being used instead.
Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co were manufacturers of high-grade earthenware and porcelain at Cauldon Place, Hanley c. 1862-1904
As well as ware for the domestic market Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co specialised in ware for export and often ware was marked with the overseas distributor or seller.
Succeeded by Cauldon Ltd in 1904 they continued until 1920 when their gates closed for the last time.
