Biography: Born in Ishikawa prefecture, Tokuda Yasokichi III is one of the most famous of Kutani potters. Named a Living National Treasure in 1997 for his saiyu glaze technique, he began potting in the early 1950s, learning from his grandfather, Tokuda Yasokichi I (1873–1957) and father Tokuda Yasokichi II (1907–1997). His honours include the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Association Chairman’s Award (1977), the Grand Prize at the International Pottery and Porcelain Exhibition (1990), and the Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan (1993). His work is held in public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Smithsonian Institute (Washington D.C), the Indianapolis Museum of Art, The British Museum (London), and Victoria & Albert Museum (London).
