Description
Nice quality walnut 19th Century Victorian jewellery box. Given the style and fittings this box is equally suitable for a lady or gentleman.
The box measures approximately 9 ¼” x 7 ¼” x 4 ½” and of dimensions that make it suitable for placing on a bedside cabinet, shelves or of course a good many items of furnishing.
The box features burr and highly figured walnut veneer to all aspects of the exterior. It is void of a brass cartouche more than likely as it was thought that such an inlay would detract from what is a high quality and attractive veneer.
Contrasting trim to all exterior edges serve to emphasise the style of the box. The lid closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock, key is for decorative purposes only. The lid interior has been neatly relined and is free of stains and tears. There are minor chips to the interior carcass but as can be seen from the photographs they do not detract to any great degree and equally have no impact whatsoever upon functionality. Removable tray with additional storage space beneath for larger items of jewellery. The tray is of a more substantial build quality than is usually found in antique boxes and constructed entirely of solid mahogany.
The jewellery items shown in the photographs are not included in the sale and are shown to give a rough idea as the suitability for use by a gentleman as gone are the days when a gent only had one or perhaps two watches and a couple pairs of cufflinks and tie pins!
