Description
Pre Victorian inlaid rosewood jewellery/dressing box equally suitable for use by a lady or gentleman. I will not use the word ‘original’ when referring to the various features of the box as aside from the replacement working key and the manicure accessories every aspect is original. Unspoilt patina. Inlaid brass strips, cartouche and escutcheon all complete and in superb condition. All edges are keen with no digs/dents/lifting of veneer. The lid closes perfectly square. Hinges and lock in A1 condition. Embossed leather panel to the lid interior with the pull tab still fully intact! Silver plated swing clasp that when released allows the panel to drop forward to give access to a removable rosewood framed mirror. There is of course the expected signs of age to the mirror ‘silver’. Mirror stand to the back fully intact. Removable tray with open storage beneath with bare wood finish in excellent condition. To some extent it is the condition and features of the tray that is the main attraction of this item in terms of appeal to collectors. The tray carcass and all dividers are of solid mahogany construction. Two small jars in A1 condition. Embossed leather lids all free of tears and complete with ring pulls. Centre section with hoops to retain various manicure accessories with storage space beneath. The smallest leather lid is in fact a sliding lid to a removable mahogany box. All storage areas are in spotless condition and all dividers are easily removed /replaced. It is very obvious that this box has had very little use over the course of the past 180+ years.. Sadly too many antique dressing/vanity boxes are stripped of the original fittings and the jars and accessories sold separately from the box. The ‘different’ style of the interior fittings on this box has probably helped to preserve the item. Given the excellent condition and degree of original features it would make an excellent addition to a collection or could be put to good modern day use by a lady or gentleman, the removable dividers provide flexibility of storage if so required and the lids could be stored if so desired to continue to preserve the item for future generations…..and value.
Must Recommend….try finding similar in such condition.
