Unusual Combination Jewellery Box / Writing Box c1875

This is quite an unusual Victorian box. Though combination boxes cannot be considered as rare the vast majority tended to feature a removable tray with a fold forward writing platform with office section to the rear of the box. This particular example has a fixed tray with a removable independent writing box accessed via a hinged drop forward front to the box. The finish to the box is also slightly unusual insofar that the box is I believe veneered with mahogany but coloured to resemble rosewood. The lacquer used must have contained the colour as upon close examination small chips to the lacquer can be seen. All veneer is original and complete as is all of the brassware. Rosette style cartouche and escutcheon. Lid and front close square. All hinges in very good condition as is the lock for which a replacement working key is supplied. Original mahogany veneer to the lid interior and all of the dividers. All dividers can be removed/replaced very easily to suit storage requirements with the exception of the two longest which in effect support all of the shorter lengths. The base lining has not been glued in place and can easily be replaced should a different colour be preferred or perhaps in years to come when it becomes worn. The writing box ‘unit’ is in splendid condition and obviously has had very little use. Original leather with the original pull tab to access the storage section still fully intact and all gilt tooling still crisp and clear. The sprung top leather covered inkpot is possibly a replacement but fits well. It is always nice to offer items that are a little different in particular when they feature such a large degree of original fixings etc.
