Very large and impressive teak Shirazi dowry chest.
This outstanding chest is beautifully decorative with finely tooled brass foliate openwork and stud detailing to all sides including the back, the lid with large ornate brass strap hinges opening to interior with fitted box, three drawers to the base, ornate carrying handles to each side and raised on substantial ornate feet.
These richly decorated marriage chests (made in India with Persian influenced style) were to show off the family's wealth, the remnants of red paint a symbol of celebration & fertility.

With marks/scuffs and wear commensurate with age and use, overall this fabulous chest is in very good condition and is not done justice by the photographs, it is extremely solidly constructed and immensely heavy!
