Victorian Brass Bound Mahogany Unisex Jewellery Box c.1860

Please see my stock page for the largest selection of jewellery boxes available on this website. Mid 1800’s brass bound mahogany jewellery box equally suitable for use by a lady or gentleman. The wood is of even colour and grain with an unspoilt mellow patina. Aside from one small piece of replaced wood to the back edge of the lid all wood is original and complete. Original inlaid brass corner pieces, straps with stout inset top handle. The lid closes perfectly square on the original brass ‘stop’ hinges. Lock and hasp in very good condition with a replacement working key supplied. The lid interior features the original ruched velvet panel set with a gilt tooled leather covered frame. No tears or replaced material with the original pull tab still intact. Original swing clasp that when released gives access to a storage envelope to the back of the panel. The base section comprises of two open sections with a central lidded storage section to the left of a removable tray with storage space beneath. The tray has the original brass hoop side handles and all dividers are original and complete. Original velvet covered lid to the right with large original velvet lid to the back. The centre band has been replaced by a previous owner and obviously has been don with skill and a good eye in terms of matching the velvet. The storage section beneath the tray has the two original dividers that can simply be lifted out to suit varying storage requirements. All base lining throughout has been very neatly relined with all pieces in each section individually cut to fit. Originally this box would have contained a mix of glass containers and glass based containers with silver plated tops but these are long gone. They could quite easily be obtained from various online sources or antique fairs but as the box stands the various sections make for an excellent jewellery box for use by either gender. The ‘classic’ style of the box displays well in any setting and it should be good for many generations to come.
