Mid 1800’s brass bound rosewood jewellery-dressing equally suitable for use by a lady or gentleman. Attractive wild grain. No unsightly light bleaching to the veneer. Inlaid brass corner pieces, escutcheon and robust inlaid/recessed top handle. All veneer and all brassware is in extremely fine condition and all original. The lid closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock the latter stamped with a crown and ‘V R’. Replacement working key supplied. The lid interior features the original ruched velvet panel within a gilt embossed leather frame. Original ‘pull tab’ and silver plated swing clasp that when released allows the panel to fold forward to access a storage envelope for notes, photographs etc. The envelope and panel is in excellent condition. The base section comprises a removable tray with the original side metal hoop handles. Section to the rear of the tray to accommodate rings and/or earrings. Matching pair of sliver topped small jars and long container again with a silver plated lid. Central storage area to middle front with circular fitting to retain a watch or pendant. Velvet topped ‘padded’ section to the right. Removable lid with hooped retainers for various accessories with storage space beneath. To the right of the tray are a matching pair of glass containers with stoppers, both in excellent condition. Velvet covered lid to a storage section between the jars. Storage section beneath the tray with all of the interior featuring the original lacquered surfaces. Both of the original dividers can very simply removed/replaced to suit varying storage requirements. It is impossible for me to state with 100% confidence to what degree the various jars and accessories are original to the box as they tended to be made in relatively standard sizes but I can state that all containers fit perfectly well and all are in very fine condition. The jewellery shown in the photographs are Not included in the sale and are shown to give a rough idea of the suitability of use by a gentleman. Sadly, all too often the containers are removed from boxes of a similar style to maximise on profit. Surely it is best to keep the containers with the box when selling so as to provide choice to the buyer give the option to store the containers safely so as to preserve the item as much as possible for future generations to have the same options?
A fine looking piece of Victorian woodenware and a practical/useful item for modern day use by a person of either gender.
