Victorian Date Hallmarked Gold Belt Buckle Locket

This fully hallmarked Victorian gold locket is crafted in the shape of a shield which conveys the donor's desire to protect the recipient. This splendid pendant locket was assayed (tested for gold purity) at Birmingham Assay Office in 1869. Both sides are embellished with splendid and superbly modelled belts and buckles which symbolise the sentimental bonds of love. The interlocking belt and the buckle represent how perfectly matched the suitors are to one another. The anterior surface is decorated ivy leaves and forget-me-not flowers. The posterior surface is ornamented with acanthus leaves and forget-me-not flowers. Acanthus leaves symbolise the desire for longevity. Forget-me-not flowers are depicted to portray the feelings of true love and respect. Ivy leaves denote everlasting love, deep friendship, fidelity & wedded bliss The hinge and catch work perfectly. The interior case is lined with golden watered silk. The belcher chain necklace measures 18 inches long.
