Description
Fine mid 19th Century English Victorian antique prattware pot-lid, "War", signed by Jesse Austin, the scene engraved after a painting by Sir Edwin Landseer R.A. Catalogued as No. 219 in Ball's A.C.C. Price Guide, a pair to Landseer's "Peace", Ball A.C.C. No. 220, and offered here in good order, free of chips or cracks, mounted in a later frame. The pair of pictures, painted circa 1846, upon which these lids were based formed part of the collection donated to the nation by Robert Vernon in 1847, both of which paintings were deemed damaged beyond repair and subsequently lost following the flooding of the Tate Galleries in 1928. A thorough investigation by Art Dealer Philip Mould and television presenter Fiona Bruce, as part of the BBC series "Fake or Fortune" concluded, on the authority of Richard Ormond, currently considered to be the leading expert on the painter, that the painting of "War" under investigation was not the original work by Landseer. A somewhat surprising decision when one considers that all of the evidence unearthed would appear to support the fact that the picture is in fact the original ~
