Magnificent antique Victorian rosewood piano stool with rise and fall action operated by a lever and dating from circa 1885 by Charles Wadman of Bath. In beautifully figured rosewood with marquetry inlay it stands on turned and carved legs with cross stretchers. It has been newly reupholstered in a green velour type fabric. The seat rises and fall by way of a lever to the underside of the stool. It reads underneath “Patented For Manufacturer Chas Wadman Bath 2376”.
From The Furniture History Society:
The firm of Wadman Brothers was recorded as supplying folding chairs to the Theatre Royal, Glasgow in 1880 and also armchairs for the dress circle and stalls to the Savoy Theatre, London, in 1881 (The Furniture Gazette, 18 December 1880 and October 1881). The partnership of cabinet makers & timber merchants was dissolved with the business continued by Charles Wadman at 5 & 6 James Street, Bath (The Furniture Gazette, 7 January 1882). He advertised a patent stool and duet stool in The Furniture Gazette, 1 November 1885 and his ‘Primrose League Registered Inlaid Primrose tables’ in The Furniture Gazette, 1 November 1886.
