Lovely set of six walnut dining chairs dating to the Victorian period (1860). The balloon backs with scrolling openwork centres are very crisply carved with climbing Convolvulus at the top and a pretty cluster of small four-petalled flowers beneath. The serpentine fronted seats are raised on cabriole front legs and out swept back legs. The back seat rails are veneered in burr walnut. Two of the chairs retain the paper label of the maker W.H.A. Roebuck of Huddersfield. Initially established in 1844 as the Roebuck Brothers (J.J. and W.H.A.), cabinet makers, upholsterers and dealers in British plate at 14 (then at 31), New Street in Huddersfield, W.H.A. Roebuck eventually moved premises to 51, New Street near the Imperial Hotel and Opposite the Halifax and Huddersfield Union Bank (as advertised in the Huddersfield Chronicle dated 10 October 1857). He frequently advertised in the Huddersfield Chronicle where he took pride in supplying goods of first class manufacture. After 20 years in business, he announced in the Huddersfield Chronicle of 30 Sep 1865 his intention of retiring. The stuff over seats of the chairs offered here for sale are traditionally re-upholstered by The Sitting Place (original stitched seat pads restored) and then covered in Poppy Sprig (Aqua/blush) fabric by Gp&J Baker. These very high quality chairs would look both elegant and very beautiful in a dining room.
