Description
A superb early Welsh oak and elm, pot board dresser of great character from the mid 18th century.
Mid-Wales or Montgomeryshire baluster turned legs, with a shaped apron of ogee form between the legs. The apron and drawer fronts have an applied, reeded moulding with unusual horizontal elm back-boards.
Provenance:- This piece also has the maker's mark to the side (I.W.), and we have included an old colour photo of the dresser covered in blue and white pottery from the vendor. They also mentioned this piece having been in their family for many generations from the start, having resided at Castell Llawen, Llwyn Du, Llwyn Celyn, Cyttir, Ty Capel, Llawryglyn, Llanidloes, and then to Scotland in the 1970s.
This piece has all the qualities required when looking for good vernacular furniture. Great patina, visible saw marks, visible dry jointed and pegged timbers, wear and tear, and masses of character. Obviously over the last 275 years it has seen some historic woodworm to the back boards, but all is sound. There are some minor losses to the top edge of the cornice at either end, but overall its condition is 99% original, which is rare.
A truly lovely piece.
Circa 1750s.
