This is a good 19th Century William IV antique mahogany two-part, brass bound secretaire military chest. The top has fine figured mahogany with cast brass insert quarter brackets and strapping, also small brass rondels inserted in the top for fixing a small gallery to the front. The chest has one deep drawer flanked by a pair of shorter drawers in the top section with a full-length drawer beneath. Each of the drawers has its original cast brass and shaped military handles, Braham style proud escutcheon and the original locks stamped ‘patent’. The drawers are lined in ash indicating the chest is probably Scottish. The well-appointed secretaire drawer opens with a pair of brass clips showing a leather insert writing surface and a removable panel which reveals a series of drawers and pigeon holes all finished in bird’s eye maple, these include small shaped pull-out narrow drawers. In the bottom section the two full length drawers of different heights with similar hardware to the top with cast brass insert brackets to the sides. The chest rests on four squat bun feet. Great colour and patination.
