Description
Offered for sale is a splendid little Wiltshaw & Robinson, Heraldic China Spill vase.
Wiltshaw & Robinson was one of the first of many potteries to follow Wh Goss's lead in the production of Heraldic Souvenir China emblazoned with heraldic crests. W&R introduced their models around 1903. Production of this fascinating range of miniatures continued well into the 1920s. Initially W&R based its models on ancient artifacts found in museums, but within a short time, offered models of an entertaining and humorous nature.
Suffragettes, modes of transport, latest inventions, seaside themes and popular songs also provided inspiration to the pottery.
Featuring a vibrant figure of Jackie Coogan, the child actor of the period, starring in Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid" in 1921 and as Oliver Twist in the 1922 film. The vase bears the crest for the English town of Wareham in Dorset. The town crest, is a red shield with a golden crescent, star and inverted fleur-de-lys.
