Franz Reder-Broili was born in 1854 at Mellrichstadt, and died in 1918 in Munich. His teachers included Johann Georg Hiltensperger, Ludwig von Löfftz and Otto Seitz. He lived and worked mainly in Munich. He can be seen as a forerunner of the influential Dachau School. He concentrated on landscapes, maintaining an imposing style as can be seen in this example. He belonged to the long-established Reder family, which also included the landscape painter and poet Heinrich von Reder and the freedom fighter Ignaz Reder.
