Of all pieces of furniture, the Windsor Chair is one of the most loved for its ancestry and form. Although no-one knows for sure when the very first Windsor Chairs were made, by the 18th Century they were being made around High-Wycombe in Buckinghamshire near to Windsor. At the time the area was still very wooded making it the perfect spot to produce chairs for the growing London market. Similar to Irish and Welsh stick-back chairs, a Windsor chair was made by Bodgers from fresh wet Elm and Beech bent wood (although Yew and Ash are also found) using a solid wood seat from which the legs, back and arms were drilled and pegged in. As the timber dried it would make the joints extremely tight without the need for glue or screws.
Today antique or vintage Windsor chairs are as popular and coveted as ever. They add a warmth to any space but with their simple spindles don’t feel dominating and allow the air to flow around the body as you sit in it. The adze carved seats are remarkably comfortable and are remarkably easy to repair if the joints become loose. Windsors are a chair for keeping and passing down, and at LoveAntiques you will find some of the best antique and vintage examples anywhere on the internet.
