Bausch & Lomb was founded in 1853 by founders John Jacob Bausch and Henry Lomb. The American Civil War caused the prices of gold and European horn to rise dramatically, growing the demand for the Bausch & Lomb specialities, which were made from a rare copper telluride mineral, vulcanite.
