19th Century circa 1880 English Hand Carved Fairground 'Coconuts' • English 19th Century circa 1880 • Extremely rare and virtually impossible to find now • Hand carved to represent the shape of a Coconut • Smooth naturally time worn finish from handling • Incredibly sculptural and decorative • From a Showman’s Travelling Fair • Some have a detachable husk that sits atop • Lignum Vitae is one hardest woods known to man • No longer available as it is a protected species • Sold as a set of 8 in total with 60 hand turned balls • Standing in 2 rows on a later made bespoke stand • Generally good condition for age and use • Full of English social History • Big ones! The chances of winning at this particular game were extremely unlikely as each ‘coconut’ has been filled with either lead or stone. They are incredibly heavy and would have been nigh on impossible to dislodge from the shy and were known by the Showman as ‘duds’. These Coconuts are full of charm and a great talking point interior or exterior design pieces. Full of English social History.
