Description
This table has a wonderful and substantial presence.
The quality and architectural merit of the design suggest that it was built as a centrepiece for a particular location - a library at one of the University Colleges perhaps, or as a feature for a large Victorian entrance hall.
It is octagonal in form with no embellishments to detract from its strong lines and architectural elements.
The top is of solid well figured mahogany and the frieze has 8 sides - 4 drawers alternating with 4 blind panels.
The drawers - 2 deep and 2 short are of fine dovetailed construction and have polished mahogany linings. They retain their original brahma locks and brass escutcheons. Sadly no keys. They have never had handles but are opened by sliding the fingers under the lower mouldings of the drawers
The central stem is beautifully designed with a cluster of pillar columns. A wide circular platform is fitted to the top of the stem with a central spindle. This supports the top of the table. A wedge fits through the spindle and secures the top in position.
The wide octagonal platform base is deep and heavy, and counterbalances the substantial weight of the top beautifully. It has a veneered surface radially segmented on each of its 8 sides. There are concealed brass castors below the base to allow the table to glide.
