Subject seascape marine portrait of the known British Brigg ship Susannah Thrift in full sail with her pilot ship St Nicholas guiding her in to port, portrayed in side profile sailing along along facing towards the right side in rough choppy seas. With sea waves crashing around the side hull of the ship. The British Union Jack flag and red ensign flags can be seen hoisted on the stern masts. With mainly clear blue sky above with dark storm clouds showing towards the corner overhead. To the far right towards the bow of the ship you can view the vessels name on the side and sailor figures shown on deck. to the flank on far right side in the distance views of a tall sail ship at anchor with a smaller sized ship further along, inbetween is a windmill along with many other buildings shown on the shoreline. On the other flank far left is the red pilot ship St Nicholas, further back with retreating high cliff coastline. Such a fascinating nautical scene. Sank 13/10/1899: Below is an extract that was published about the ships fate in the Shields Daily Gazette on Tuesday, 17/10/1899. Sank after a collision with Leopold II off Dover On a voyage from the Tyne towards Cowes with a cargo of coal Also seen as built by A & R Hopper at Newcastle.Captain Clarkson and part of the crew of the Susannah thrift reached their homes in South Shields yesterday. From an interview a representative had with Captain Clarkson, it would appear that the crew, who numbered seven hands all told, just escaped with their lives. After the Susannah Thrift was run into she dis. appeared within the remarkably short space of three minutes. One of the seamen, named James Boys, through the force of the collision was completely hurled over the vessel's wheel, and carried against the bulwarks with such violence that it is regarded as extremely. fortunate that his injuries did not terminate fatally. Boys next found himself in a very awkward predicament. He was alone the broadside the doomed ship. and finding that she was rapidly going under water, there was no other course open to him than to leap overboard. He was rescued by the steamer's boat in a very exhausted condition. Captain Clarkson and another of the crow, Martin Johnson, suddenly found themselves in the water. They clung to a rope suspended from the other vessel's stern till they were picked up. The whole of the crew have lost all their clothes, etc. Captain Clarkson being rescued without shoes or cap. The night was five and clear. The Susannah Thrift was built by Mr Hopper, and launched from the low end of Newcastle Quay to the order of Mr Ww. Thrift, of Blyth, and was regularly in the Lisbon trade, principally carrying cork and salt. She was the last vessel launched from that place. She was purchased 13 years ago by Mr Pearson. The Susannah Thrift was a noted sailor, making some extraordinary rapid passages on the coast. Ref sources tynebuiltships/S-Ships/susannahthrift1865 & Art UK.
