The vineyard worker would attach the hotte to their back using leather straps and place the harvested grapes directly into the container. This red hotte features a hand-painted coat of arms flanked by the phrase "Châteauneuf-du-Pape" in gold letters. The coat of arms depicts two crossed keys entwined in a curled ribbon emanating from the base of a closed crown. The ovate crown is adorned with gold beading and fleur-de-lis and is topped with a cross pattée (a cross with narrowing arms and flat sides). Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most renowned appellations (Appellation d'origine contrôlée - Aoc) in the southern Rhône Valley wine region of southeastern France. Its vineyards are located around the Châteauneuf-du-Pape commune and neighboring villages, including Bédarrides, Courthézon, and Sorgues, between Avignon and Orange. Most of the cultivable land is used for planting grapes, which are used to produce a well-known red wine appellation.
