Description
This is a good antique aneroid mystery barometer No 15985 by C.P. Goerz, Berlin for the French market c1925.
Mystery barometer having 3” reverse painted bevelled glass dial calibrated in mmHg with a range from 720 – 790 and divided to 1/10ths, annotated with a range of standard French meteorological advices, the lower part with maker’s name “C.P.Goerz, Friedenau Al.” Index knob and pointer. Verso with plain bevelled glass. The white stepped pointer mounted to central hub housing recoil spring and fine chain.
The whole raised on a flared brass stand, the base concealing a cantilevered movement driven from 2” single capsule, the signal transmitted vertically via a fine wire. The base bottom with original card reference with basic instruction and altimetric table of pressure conversion, calibration screw and serial no. “15985.”
Condition: Serviced and conserved. Generally crisp, the brass work cleaned, the dial housings re-painted, generally restored.
Comments: Most attractive desk barometers which are rarely found in working order, this Goerz-Tisch-Barometer had suffered, as have almost all, from deterioration to the original finishes. It has benefitted from sympathetic restoration.
Highly decorative and always a good talking point, these aneroid barometers are, however, not known for their performance due to the “mystery” design, although this one works acceptably over the normal range of pressure.
