Description
This is a rare little spoon by London Arts & Crafts silversmiths, Sandheim Brothers.
The spoon exhibits a mix of classic Arts & Crafts styling, with its hammered bowl and twist stem, plus the Gothic quatrefoil terminal.
The Sandheim partnership consisted of two brothers; Julius and Adolphe, with the former having studied at the Central School of Art, under the tutelage of William Seward.
The partnership originally started as watchmakers, but by 1908 they had moved into silversmithing.
Adolphe's daughter, Amy (born 1876) continued the business and was actually producing her own jewellery and silver pieces from 1924 through to 1939.
It's known that Amy Sandheim was designing pieces for the family business years before she actually started producing herself, and this is likely one of her designs.
The spoon carries full U.K. hallmarks for London 1920 - the S.Bs mark of the brothers is a little rubbed to the right hand side, but you can just make out the lower case 's'.
At the time of listing, I cannot find a Sandheim design exactly like this one - the Gothic quatrefoil motif can be observed in various forms on other pieces manufactured by them.
All Sandheim Brothers and Amy Sandheim pieces are highly collected, with some being rare to find.
The piece is offered in good condition, and is without damage or repair - it shows only perfectly normal and light signs of use.
